Community Development was the main focus of S.T.E.P.'s activity when established in 1997, with grassroots work completed in marginalised areas of South Tyrone. S.T.E.P.'s ethos of empowerment is directed at sectors and individuals in the community who require advice, guidance and training to allow them to full participate in the socio-economic life of South Tyrone.
S.T.E.P.'s Community Development team is involved in a number of programmes designed to promote inclusion and participation of all members of our community. At present it is involved in the following projects and activities:
-
Working with the Housing Executive in trying to develop affordable housing opportunities for local people and migrant workers
-
Campaigning to develop an emergency accommodation facility to serve the Dungannon and South Tyrone area
-
Developing a comprehensive Supporting People programme in the area, that is designed to try and help to prevent homelessness among local people and migrant workers
-
Carrying out research regarding the families of migrant workers and the facilities that are available to them and also looking at whatever obstacles may exist that prevent migrant families being fully involved in local activities
-
Conducting a research project involving interviewing women whose lives have been affected by the Troubles
